I am having some problems with my CPAP, what can I do?

The following is a list of some common problems associated with CPAP, if the suggested solutions do not solve your problem; please call our office for a more comprehensive consultation.

Problem

Solution

Soreness or redness around nose

May be wearing mask too tight or mask may not be properly fitted. Try adjusting mask so that it fits just tight enough to eliminate leaks. If this does not work may need to try different mask.

Eyes dry or sore and blood-shot

Mask may be leaking at bridge of nose and causing air to get into eyes at night – need to tighten mask at top.

Congested

Patients sometimes report congestion in the first couple of weeks of having mask. This usually passes and you may use nasal saline drops to help. If real severe or lasts a while may need a humidifier or consult with physician.

Dry mouth

Probably breathing through mouth. May need a chin strap.

Nose Bleeds

Air may be drying out nasal passages and causing cracked membranes that may bleed. Need a humidifier.

Taking mask off during night. Feels like suffocating.

Probably having a leak or breathing through mouth. Check mask and re-adjust, also may need to try chin strap.

My machine will not work.

If you have cleaned your machine recently and you cleaned your hose, be sure that the hose is completely dry. If any water enters the small tube coming out of the side of the large hose then the machine will not work till the hose is completely dry.
